Queensland's smoke alarm laws are changing

From 1 January 2027, every home in Queensland must have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms โ€” in every bedroom, in hallways, and on every level. Selling, leasing or renovating a home already triggers the requirement now.

Most homes we attend have the wrong type of alarm, not enough of them, or none that talk to each other. We assess your whole home and install a compliant system properly the first time โ€” so you're covered for the deadline and, more importantly, so your family gets those extra minutes of warning.

Three things every home needs

Under Queensland law, all three must be true at the same time โ€” the right type, in the right places, connected the right way.

๐Ÿ’ก
Photoelectric
Alarms must be photoelectric type to AS 3786:2014 โ€” they detect the slow, smouldering smoke of a night-time house fire far earlier than the old ionisation alarms.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ
In Every Bedroom
An alarm is required in each bedroom, in every hallway connecting bedrooms, and on each storey โ€” even if there are no bedrooms on that level.
๐Ÿ”—
Interconnected
Every alarm must be linked so when one detects smoke, they all sound together โ€” waking you no matter which end of the house the fire starts.
๐Ÿ”Œ
Hard-Wired or Lithium
Alarms must be either hard-wired to mains power or powered by a non-removable 10-year lithium battery. We'll advise which suits your home.
๐Ÿ
Whole-Home Check
We assess your existing alarms, work out exactly how many you need and where, and give you a clear fixed price before we start.
โœ…
Tested & Dated
Every alarm is function-tested and date-marked, and all electrical work is carried out by a licensed QLD electrician.

Smoke Alarm FAQ

When do I have to comply with the new smoke alarm laws?
All Queensland homes must have photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms by 1 January 2027. If you sell, lease or start a new lease before then, compliance is already required โ€” so it's worth sorting sooner rather than later.
How many smoke alarms do I need?
You need one in every bedroom, one in every hallway that connects bedrooms to the rest of the home, and at least one on every level. The exact number depends on your floor plan โ€” we'll count it up for you at the free assessment.
Should I get hard-wired or 10-year battery alarms?
Both are legal. Hard-wired alarms are ideal when there's existing wiring or during a renovation; 10-year sealed lithium alarms are a tidy, lower-cost option for existing homes. We'll recommend the best mix for your place.
Can you replace my old alarms with compliant ones?
Yes โ€” that's the most common job we do. We remove your old ionisation or standalone alarms and replace them with a fully interconnected photoelectric system that meets the legislation.
Do you service my area?
We cover the entire Sunshine Coast โ€” Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore, Buderim, Noosa and the hinterland. Give us a call to confirm availability in your suburb.
