A few minutes of the right thing can stop a fault becoming a fire

If you can smell burning or see sparks: turn the main switch off at the switchboard. Do not try to work out which circuit it is first — kill the lot, then call. Unplug whatever was running at the time if you can do it safely, and leave that powerpoint alone until it has been looked at. A connection that has arced once will arc again, usually worse.

If the safety switch will not reset: unplug everything on that circuit and try resetting once. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time — whatever trips it is your culprit, and you have just saved me an hour. If it still will not reset with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring. Leave it off and ring me. Do not keep resetting it; you are not fixing anything and you are stressing the device protecting you.

Old fuse board of the type that causes recurring faults

Faults I turn up to most often

Most electrical emergencies come down to a handful of causes. If yours is on this list, it is a job I have done many times before.

๐Ÿ”Œ
No Power at All
Whole-house outages that are not the network's fault — usually a main switch, a failed RCD, or a fault on the incoming supply.
๐Ÿš๏ธ
Half the House Is Dead
One circuit down while the rest works. Almost always a tripped breaker hiding a genuine fault further down the line.
โš ๏ธ
Safety Switch Keeps Tripping
An RCD that will not stay on is doing its job. Something is leaking to earth, and I isolate the circuit to find what.
๐Ÿ”ฅ
Burning Smell or Scorching
Burnt insulation has a smell you do not forget. Switch off at the board and call — this one does not wait until morning.
โœจ
Sparking Powerpoints
Arcing, browning around the outlet, or a plug hot to touch. Usually a loose connection, and a genuine fire risk.
๐ŸŒฉ๏ธ
Storm Damage
Lightning strikes, water in the meter box, or a branch through the service line. Make-safe first, repairs after.
๐Ÿšฟ
No Hot Water
Often a failed element or a tripped circuit rather than a dead tank. Worth checking before replacing the whole unit.
๐Ÿ’ก
Lights Out or Flickering
Flickering across several rooms usually points to a loose neutral — worth taking seriously rather than living with.
๐Ÿ—„๏ธ
Switchboard Faults
Buzzing, heat, or ceramic fuses that keep blowing. Older boards on the Coast are a common source of trouble.

What happens when you ring

No call centre, no ticket number, no waiting for someone to call you back.

1
You get me on the phone
Not a dispatcher. I will ask what is happening and talk you through making it safe while we are still on the call.
2
I tell you honestly
Whether it needs someone now or whether it can safely wait until morning. Sometimes it can, and I will say so.
3
Fault found and made safe
I trace the actual cause rather than resetting it and hoping. Make-safe first so the house is not left dangerous.
4
Price before the repair
Once I know what is wrong I quote the fix before I do it. No meter running, no surprise on the invoice.

You get Matt, not a call centre

Pip Electrics is one licensed electrician working out of Currimundi. The person who answers the phone is the person who does the work.

๐Ÿชช Licensed & Insured
QLD electrical licence No. 89654 and ARCtick L226788. Fully insured, every job to Australian Standards.
๐Ÿ“ Genuinely Local
Based at Currimundi, working Caloundra through to Noosa. Not a franchise dispatching from Brisbane.
๐Ÿงพ Fixed Price Upfront
The repair is quoted before it starts, so you are never watching an hourly rate tick over while I work.
๐Ÿ” Fault Found Properly
I find the cause rather than resetting the breaker and leaving. The same fault twice is not a fix.

Emergency electrical — the usual questions

Is this actually an emergency, or can it wait?
If you can smell burning, see sparking, or there is water in wiring, treat it as urgent — switch off at the board and ring. If the power is simply out in one room and nothing smells or looks wrong, it can usually wait until normal hours. Ring anyway and I will tell you honestly which it is.
The whole street is out. Do I still need an electrician?
No. If your neighbours are out too it is a network fault and Energex will be working on it. Check a couple of houses before calling anyone. If it is only your place, that is when it is worth a call.
Can I just keep resetting the safety switch?
Please do not. An RCD trips because something is leaking current to earth, and repeatedly resetting it wears out the one device standing between a fault and someone getting a shock. Unplug everything on that circuit, reset once, then add things back one at a time to find the culprit.
What areas do you cover?
Caloundra through to Noosa and out to the hinterland — Kawana, Maroochydore, Buderim, Mooloolaba, Nambour, Landsborough and everywhere in between. If you are not sure, ring and ask.
Do you charge more for emergency work?
Work outside normal hours costs more than the same job on a Tuesday morning — that is true of every trade. You will be told the price before any repair starts, so there is no surprise at the end.

Send me the details and I will come back to you
